This activity consists of a Physical Education unit based on urban cycling training adapted to Secondary Education. The programme aims to improve urban cycling skills, motivation, and healthy lifestyle habits.
The activity followed the requirements for be included in the official Physical Education curriculum over 4 sessions, were the sessions 2 to 4 have a two-hour duration. The first session (60 minutes) is theoretical, where students are sensitised about the benefits and utility of the bicycle use. In the second session (120 minutes) the students improved their cycling skills in the school sport facilities. After completed successfully this second session, the students used the cycling skills in a real context with traffic road in the third session (120 minutes). Finally, in the four session (120 minutes), students become teachers for 1st grade Secondary School students, showing them the learnings reached in the previous sessions.
Students reported high levels of enjoyment, motivation, and participation. They particularly valued its competence to drive a bicycle in a road traffic context and the novelty of the activities compared to traditional Physical Education lessons. The teacher highlighted the needed of the programme and its positive impact on students’ engagement, attitudes and learning related to physical activity and health.
