Colour the classroom with real world colours!

Description

First day:

  1. Talk about what different colours are called in English.
  2. Instruct the pupils to walk or bike to school the next day, if possible. Otherwise, a short outdoor visit could do.
  3. Instruct them to notice what colours they see on their way to school.

Second day:

  1. Instruct the pupils to paint their colours on a paper.
  2. Ask the pupils to take a few minutes to try to remember what the colours are called, but to not say it out loud.
  3. Thereafter, initiate a whole-group conversation where you ask the pupils what colours they saw on their way to school and what they are called. In the meantime, you write the colours’ names correctly spelled on a blackboard, whiteboard, etc. Depending on the pupils’ competence levels, other words could be introduced, which describe the objects that were observed (nouns such as trees, cars, and bikes) and adjectives describing relationships between the objects (big-bigger-biggest – small-smaller-smallest). Think about providing more challenging tasks for those with more advanced English language skills. For instance, the whole conversation can be conducted in English for those that want to.
  4. Then, instruct the pupils to write the colours’ names next to each colour.
  5. Finally, if possible, cut pieces from the colours and put them together with the names of the colours on the wall.
  6. Evaluate together by asking how the pupils think that the activity went, what they felt and thought about doing the different parts, etc.
