Before the national tests, students gathered in the sports hall one hour before the test began. They signed in on a class list and chose one of three activities to take part in for 30 minutes. After completing the activity, students had time to shower and change. They then signed out and went to the school cafeteria to receive a light breakfast.
The activities offered varied and included volleyball, dodgeball, walking, Just Dance, gym training, badminton, and rounders.
We chose to offer three activities, but this can of course be adapted depending on how many adults are available on the day. It is helpful if one person is responsible for student check-in and check-out. We also had the option to provide a light breakfast, but this part of the activity can be omitted if needed.
Many students appreciated the opportunity. Even though not all students chose a high-intensity activity, they still arrived earlier in the morning and had time to prepare for the national tests. The activity also gave students a chance to process any stress and to socialise with classmates.
Several teachers also reported that students appeared more alert and energised during the national tests.
